How to care for ourselves: Self-compassion for nurses and midwives

Training Overview

Background

Self-compassion involves a broad skill set that is essential for healthy living and high performance. Nurses high in self-compassion are able to acknowledge their own distress, and regulate their emotions in an adaptive way; this helps to reduce the negative effects of stress and protect against burnout. Nurses high in self-compassion also tend to take better care of themselves outside of work. In short, learning self-compassion skills is essential for nurses to remain engaged, productive and satisfied with their careers. Creating a self-compassionate team is also likely to lead to a range of other benefits in team effectiveness, and facilitate compassionate leadership.

Inside the training, participants will learn through practical exercises and group discussion what self-compassion is, and how to actually practice it.

Participants will leave feeling confident in using a range of new tools to help them cope with the stresses and strains of their role. This will help improve their personal effectiveness and overall mental and physical health.

This training can be delivered as a workshop (half-day or full-day). The most effective format is to spread this training across several sessions, giving participants opportunity to practice skills. This can be arranged in a bespoke way for your organisation.

Testimonials

Workshop feedback:

I attended Nathan's workshop on self-compassion for midwives recently and it was very enlightening. Amongst other things, he did some visualisation techniques with our group which I have found to be really beneficial. He taught us that they can be easily transferable for use with all sorts of situations. I have already felt the benefit of his session and it's amazing how 2.5 hours can have such a positive impact in so many ways instantly.
